At Colecar Strategic Land, we’re passionate about helping people develop their careers as well as promoting land. That approach has certainly been true for Land and Planning Assistant Sean Coleman Jnr, who has spent the past year gaining hands-on experience across both sides of the business, while building the foundations for a career in the industry.
Sean joined Colecar just over a year ago after completing a Level 4 Construction Management & Design T Level at Oaklands College in St Albans. Since then, he has become an integral part of the team, supporting both the Land and Planning departments and gaining valuable experience throughout the development process, from identifying opportunities to helping progress sites through planning.
Working across both disciplines has given Sean a unique insight into how strategic land projects evolve and the many different skills needed to bring them forward.
“The best part of joining Colecar has been getting involved in both the land acquisition and planning sides of the business,” says Sean. “It’s given me a much better understanding of how everything fits together, and I’ve learned a huge amount from the people around me.”
For Sean, it’s the people that make the role especially rewarding.
“I’ve had the chance to meet landowners, agents, planning consultants and lots of other professionals across the industry. Building those relationships is something I really enjoy, and it’s a big part of what makes every day different.”
That variety is another reason Sean enjoys coming to work.
“No two days are the same. Every project brings a different challenge, and I’ve been trusted to get involved in all sorts of work. It’s been a great way to learn and build my confidence.”
Outside of Colecar, Sean runs his own drone photography and videography business, carrying out work for clients including Savills. Balancing his own business alongside a full-time role has strengthened his organisational skills, taught him how to manage client relationships and helped him develop a professional approach that benefits both roles.
Sean has a particular interest in housing delivery and planning policy, especially how changes to the planning system could help bring forward more much-needed homes.
“A planning system that’s quicker and more consistent would make a real difference,” he says. “It would give landowners, developers and local communities greater certainty, while helping deliver the homes that are needed.”
Although still at the start of his career, Sean is determined to keep learning and make the most of every opportunity that comes his way.
“Starting my career in the industry at 18 has given me a fantastic opportunity. I want to keep building my knowledge, meeting new people and learning from experienced professionals. There’s still so much to learn, and that’s what makes it exciting.”
When he’s not at work, Sean enjoys golf, padel and football, going to the gym, skiing, and spending time with friends and family.
Sean’s enthusiasm, willingness to learn and positive attitude have made him a valued member of the Colecar team, and we’re looking forward to seeing his career continue to grow.
